Non-adherent Dressing for Wounds

Non-adherent gauze dressings are specially constructed to not stick to a healing wound. The non-adherent film helps decrease skin damage and can be placed directly on the open wound.

Because non-adherent dressings don't stick to the wound, the risk of damaging newly formed tissue is much lower. It also minimizes the pain associated with dressing changes. Another benefit of non-adherent dressings is that they do not leave any residue behind when they are removed. They can be used on a variety of wound types such as ulcers, partial thickness burns, lacerations, and post-operative wounds. Be sure to follow your doctor's instructions when choosing a wound dressing.

Many non-stick dressings are made from gauze and have a poly film on the contact layer. This film keeps the dressing from adhering to the wound bed. Some non-adherent bandages are also impregnated with ingredients like petrolatum or hydrogel. Petrolatum is designed to keep the wound bed moist and help it heal. Hydrogel helps relieve wound pain and reduces bacterial growth.

Express Medical Supply carries non-adherent dressings with and without adhesive borders for wound care.

Adhesive Borders

A dressing with an adhesive border is also known as an island dressing. If you are going to use an island dressing, be sure that the absorbent cotton pad is large enough to cover the entire wound and that the adhesive border does not touch any part of the wound.

Non-Adhesive Borders

If you are using a dressing without an adhesive border, you will need to apply a secondary dressing on top to hold the primary dressing in place. When it comes to secondary dressings, you can choose one that is absorbent or non-absorbent. The benefit of an absorbent secondary dressing is that it can absorb exudate that might miss the mesh of the primary dressing. If you do not need additional absorption, medical tape or a bandage wrap are great options.
